Album update #4

Thanks for reading!

This last week my niece was in town on break between sessions at school and any spare time I had was spent with her, it was super fun! Arcades, shopping, and the aquarium, it was a full week!

Supercut of the flight out to Boston

Where were we… right! With day 1 of the album under our belt and all of the percussion, drums, and bass complete, we were already ahead of schedule, which is excellent because I went into recording a little bit anxious about my vocal endurance.

I had a vocal injury in 2013. It was a few months before I was to be married and not long after my injury I ruptured my Achilles tendon. I remember that summer being quite a bummer except for planning our wedding because I couldn’t sing for more than 15 minutes before both my chest voice and head voice were impossible to access.

Maybe you or someone you know relies on your body for work as an athlete or something more mundane. Maybe you’ve seen them inure themselves; carpal tunnel, or a torn ACL. If you’ve had an injury that prevents you from doing what brings you joy and puts food on your table, you know the insecurity and anxiety that comes once you have an injury of this level.

This is what it looks like when you realize your lyrics no longer work with the changes to the arrangement you’ve made.

Perhaps a story for another time, but I was a pretty serious athlete in high school and had an injury between my junior and senior year. Your mind is never quite sure how healthy you are, competitively, ever again.

Part of being human and having a body as you get older is realizing that nothing lasts forever. It feels that as quickly as you hit new personal-bests, you’re mourning the loss of something: your hair, your figure, your endurance.

We spent most of the day doing guitar, acoustic and electric. Here’s some footage of the day.

The clip above is from a reworked song that kind of kicked off the idea I had for Reverend Doctor called “More of You”. I originally wrote it for a different project that never played any shows, but enjoyed it enough to keep it around and see what Producer Carter and I could do with it.

I try to make three updates this week, since I missed last week.

Be good to each other,

Reverend Doctor
